A branch training meeting on 25 Oct 05 focused on organising at County Hall and had some difficult issues to tackle. But low turnout due to half-term holidays did not stop plans getting under way for raising the Branch's profile in the 'corridors of power'.
Left to right: Marija Lees - Steward (Finance & IT); Roberto Franceschini - Branch Vice-Chair, and Colin Trudgeon Lead Steward (Social Services) all expressed strongly the need for UNISON's message to be everywhere for employees to see.
And we speak in both meanings of that phrase, because it is clear that UNISON's presence is not visible everywhere in the County Hall workplaces. In fact it's hardly visible anywhere there.
When a steward is struggling to get their Trade Union duties respected (and back-filled!) by line managers it doesn’t help that steward if there is no visible sign that UNISON has a right, both legally and by formal agreements with the Employer, to be active everywhere.
Our aim should be for an up-to-date, highly visible notice board in every workplace. If you don't have a suitable number to cover your area then start the process of getting the County Council to put them up for you. It's our right and their obligation.
Anyone who has a less than co-operative response from their line manager please let Moira Macdonald, our Branch Secretary, know straight away.
