Press Release - Monday 16 Jan 2006

More Devon County Council Jobs under threat as Meals On Wheels looks set to go

Devon County Council today announced the proposed transfer to the private sector of its Meals On Wheels Service - with the possible loss of 35 jobs.

This follows last week's announcement of a 'recruitment freeze' due to a budget crisis and the proposed closure of four residential care homes across the county

The Council is proposing to outsource its Meals On Wheels service to private company Appetito who it says can offer a 365 day a year service countywide.

UNISON, the public service union representing council workers, is appalled at the latest blow to jobs in the county.

Branch Secretary Moira MacDonald said:

'This is yet more bad news for our members. The authority has said that it will try to redeploy these people internally but given that there is a job freeze now, I fail to see how they can do this.

UNISON will do all that it can to protect its members interests and is in constant talks with management in efforts to secure members long term job security.'
